Week 11 - Autumn Term - 29 November 2024
St Anne’s C of E (A) Primary News
“Developing the whole child, spiritually, mentally and physically in a caring Christian
environment through close links to the Church and Community”
Friday 29th November 2024
Dear Parents & Carers,
Some of you may wonder what it is like to be in a school at Christmas time…..well incredibly busy would be my first response! Teachers are busy trying to ensure all learning for the term is completed with quizzes and assessments along the way. Christmas decorations go up and school becomes a festive hive of activity with our younger classes in school working hard to learn their words and songs for the nativities the week after next. Our thanks go this week to North Notts Bid for their donation of the school Christmas tree.
In the Christian calendar, we are nearing the period of ‘Advent’ – Advent means 'coming' and it's the period before Christmas, which celebrates the birth of Jesus. Advent is a time of preparation and waiting for the birth of Christ. In school, this means getting things ready for Christmas; in collective worship we will be revisiting what the prophets proclaimed in the Old Testament as well as understanding the significance of the Advent candles and the ‘counting down’ of days within an Advent calendar.
Classes Reception and One have been to Perlethorpe for a nativity trail this week and reported back that they had a wonderful time, turning into the characters and re-enacting the story.
Reception class also had a visit from the RNLI as part of their ongoing learning about ‘people who help us’ and asked many probing questions!
Attendance
Some families may have received or will be receiving attendance letters over the next week, as the school continues to follow the Government changes to attendance in school. If attendance is a challenge – please talk to us. The current national guidelines mean that there can be significant impact to parents, if the new rulings are not followed. Further guidance is available on the Nottinghamshire County Council website.
Parents/carers can only receive a maximum of two fines for any individual child over a three-year rolling period for an unauthorised absence from school. A third request for a fine, within a three-year rolling period, would result in the matter being referred directly to the Magistrates court – this can have serious impact on future job roles if it leads to a conviction.
Sporting news
On Wednesday, children in Class 2 attended the Bassetlaw School Games gymnastics festival at Retford Gymnastics Club. They had a great time and there were definitely some budding gymnastics in attendance.

Looking ahead to Christmas
Is Christmas a struggle for you as a family? Please don’t be proud - if you are finding it difficult, school can contact the local charity ‘From the Heart’, who work within the community to ensure children receive a gift at Christmas time. Please have a word with Mrs Middleton or Mrs Ridout if the school can act on your behalf.
Crafting Afternoon
Class teachers will be sending out messages to parents/carers about their plans for Thursday 12th December at 1.30 pm, where ‘extra pairs’ of hands can come together for crafts – we ask only one adult from a family, but do not worry if you are busy at work there will be plenty of people to lend a hand.
Learning News from the Classes
Reception and Class One
Class Reception and Class 1 visited Perlethorpe this week for a Nativity trail. They spent part of the day walking from 'Nazareth' to 'Bethlehem'. When they arrived in 'Bethlehem' they had to pay their tax to two Roman soldiers, then they visited seven inns until they found space for Mary and Joseph. Inside the stable, the children acted out the story of the ‘Nativity’ and celebrated the birth of Baby Jesus. The rest of the day was spent making pinecone Christmas trees, ash star baubles and Christmas cards. A great day for all!
Class Two
This week Class 2 have made a spiral snowman Christmas decoration. They are using this experience as inspiration for an independent write demonstrating everything they know about instructions.
Class Three
This week, Class 3 have been completing assessments to show their learning so far. All the children have risen to this challenge with the right attitude to learning. The children have also been developing their geographical knowledge based on their Stone Age topic. The children have been gaining new knowledge on the continents, countries, and cities of the world and how this would have been different in the Stone Age.
They were able to reflect and use new knowledge gained at the Creswell Crags trip last week, where a video showed a timeline of the area in the different moments of Stone Age History. Using all this knowledge the children had to design their own Stone Age map focussing on landmarks.
In science, the children were investigating how the different joints, such as shoulder and knee, worked. They worked in pairs to create a small model, that then then had to evaluate. Do we have any physiotherapists amongst the parent group, who could talk to the class about ‘the skeleton’ even more?
Class Four
In Class 4’s geography lesson this week, they were researching trade and industry in the different countries of South America. They learnt about the main products produced in South America and the key industries. In English this week, Class 4 have started their new book ‘The Great Kapok Tree’. They made predictions about the text, studied modelled texts to magpie ideas and began to plan their narrative writing. In science Class 4 were learning about volume. They used different instruments to record the decibels when making loud and quiet sounds and found that louder volumes have bigger vibrations. In French, Class 4 have been learning to say the names of different vegetables as part of their unit ‘Les Legumes’.
Class Five
This week, Class 5 wrapped up their first set of assessments and Mrs Camish was absolutely thrilled with the focus and perseverance the children demonstrated throughout this period. It’s always lovely to see them rise to the occasion!
In an exciting turn of events, the children transformed into geographers as they delved into their local area. Working collaboratively in teams, they crafted some engaging enquiry questions. They even learned how to carry out an effective survey, figuring out the best ways to use open and closed questions to gather the essential data.
In Art, the children started to get all Christmassy by crafting tree decorations. It was heartwarming to see their enthusiasm and the decorations brought a bit of festive cheer.
In PE, they blew Mrs Camish's socks off as they took on the role of young leaders. Dividing into small groups, they led their peers through a series of warm-ups and passing activities. They were assessed on both teamwork and communication, and I must say, their thoughtful approach to delivering the sessions with such enthusiasm.
Class Six
In Class 6 this week, children have been working really hard to conquer adding and subtracting mixed number fractions. In writing they have been writing their own independent newspaper articles, reporting on the Blitz.
During history, they looked at how roles for women have changed over time, with World War II being a significant turning point.
In art children have begun to create 3D sculptures using wire, tinfoil and mod-roc.
During PE they have had a few very successful games of handball demonstrating all the skills they have been shown. Class six have also found time this week to help make stalls and posters for the Christmas fair.
